The Next Step Program: What to Expect
In our Next Step program, teens are typically provided with both short-term crisis management strategies as well as long-term interventions that address more complex emotional issues. Through this multi-faceted approach, teenagers can learn how to better manage their emotions and make healthier choices for themselves in the future.
The Next Step Program holds three sessions per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The program is exclusively available to D155 students. D155 students are students in the Community High School District 155, which is located in McHenry County, Illinois.
What Are the Benefits of the Next Step Program?
Due to the close relationships formed between the patient and their therapists during the program, teens often feel more comfortable talking about sensitive topics related to their struggles with substance use or mental health concerns. This open dialogue helps improve understanding among both parties and allows teens to develop healthier coping skills. Teens can then utilize and apply these skills when faced with difficult situations in the future.
The Next Step Program can offer vital support for those who are dealing with difficult life circumstances or experiencing emotional distress. The program provides them with consistent therapeutic intervention while still allowing them to maintain some level of independence.
This specialized program focuses on developing new coping strategies, strengthening interpersonal relationships, and building emotional resilience. Having this support during recovery can be a powerful tool that helps youth learn how to better manage stress.
What Are Some Signs Your Teen May Benefit From the Next Step?
- Changes in sleeping and eating habits – If your teen is having difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early in the morning, or if they’ve begun to lose interest in food or have lost significant weight without attempting to diet, these could be signs that their mental health is deteriorating and extra support could help them.
- Social withdrawal – If your teen has become increasingly isolated and withdrawn from friends and family or has stopped engaging in activities they used to enjoy, it may be time to consider an the Next Step as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for their mental health issues.
- Mood swings or irritability – If your teen is experiencing drastic changes in mood without seeming cause or exhibiting sudden outbursts of anger, this could be a sign they need more intensive care than basic counseling can provide. Our program would provide more comprehensive care that could help address these issues.
- Substance use – If your teen is misusing alcohol or drugs as a way of dealing with their emotions instead of talking about them, it’s important to get them extra help. Through this type of program, they can learn healthier coping mechanisms for managing their mental health concerns.
- Self-harm behaviors – If your teen is engaging in self-harming behaviors such as cutting themselves, this could be a sign that deeper issues are at play. Professional treatment should be explored as soon as possible so those underlying issues can be addressed and managed properly.
